European Christmas Market Experiences:

Since I didn’t make it to Europe this holiday season, I asked some unique ladies I follow on Instagram to share their experiences during the holiday season. Including, what it’s like to visit the Christmas Markets where they are. If you’ve been following my blog long enough you know I’m obsessed with Holiday/Christmas Markets. I really don’t know what it is about them. But everything seems so unique and interesting. From the food to the hand-crafted decorations and jewelry, I get excited just thinking about it. So I reached out to those I knew who would be just as excited as I am and each person was kind enough to share their experience from different countries including Germany, Finland and Scotland. Now let’s explore some European Christmas Markets.

The majority of European cities light up in December with beautiful Christmas markets. There are 7 of them in Cologne, Germany each with their unique theme. My favorite was the Cathedral Christmas market because it had a main stage covered with Christmas lights where people performed some famous Christmas carols. The best part of any Christmas market is the Food and Drinks! Some favorites are the following:

  • Bratwurst (German hot dogs)
  • Reibekuchen (potato pancakes)
  • Waffles and Crêpes
  • Glühwein (red or white mulled wine)
  • Eierpunsch (“hot eggnog”)
  • Lumumba (hot chocolate with rum)

Here is a tip, explore the city during the day and visit the Christmas markets at night. This is when it’s magical with all the beautiful lights.

Christmas time is typically spent with family in Finland. We give each other gifts on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is the official slumber party when we watch movies and have outdoor fun in the snow. Boxing Day is quite traditional for meeting more family members. There are many big parties that happen in the bars in the evening.

As one of the most unique European countries I’ve visited, I can say Finland is at the top of my list of favorite places to visit.

Scotland

Christmas and the surrounding festive season in Edinburgh are spent in anticipation of attending the annual Christmas Market. Visitors from all over the world flock to the rainy capital from mid-November to wander the cities glittering streets and take in the views from the famous castle grounds. The market itself is full of stalls selling all manner of decorations, souvenirs and festive foods, filling the chilly air with the scent of cinnamon, oranges and mulled cider. It truly is a magical season to visit Scotland.
