Are you a solo traveler curious about visiting Finland? I have 5 reasons why this country is great for solo travelers. Keep reading to learn why.

1. Public Transportation

Getting around Finland using public transportation is one of the best features about the country. Not only is it easy to get around individual cities, but getting a train from one large city to another is not only easy but affordable. There are trams, trains and buses available to travelers as well as rentable bikes and scooters. As a solo traveler, I never felt intimidated or worried about finding my way around or purchasing a ticket to get from one place to another.

2. Safety

Finland is highly rated by the Global Peace Index as one of the safest countries in the world. The country not only has a low crime rate, but is also at a low risk for natural disasters. Making it less intimidating to travel solo, even for first timers. As a frequent visitor to a city like Helsinki, I’ve always had the best of experiences. Even when lost, people in the local community are always willing to help you.

3. Food

From traditional foods like reindeer and salmon soup to karelian pie, what’s not to love about Finnish food. When visiting Finland as a solo traveler you would be surprised how many places there are to eat and connect with fellow travelers as well as people local to the community. There are so many amazing places to eat when you visit Finland, especially in larger cities like Helsinki. Find out some of my favorite places to eat there.

4. Sauna

When visiting Finland it is impossible to leave without having a sauna experience. I’ve had the pleasure of having a sauna experience at every hotel I’ve visited in Helsinki as well as having a local sauna experience by a local lake in Vantaa. As a solo traveler, it’s important to have this experience, whether at your hotel or one of the local saunas. This is an experience that will leave you not only more connected to Finnish culture, but a little more self-confident about your body.

5. Nature

When it comes to visiting Finland, there seems to be a never-ending list of natural spaces to visit. Even in cities like Helsinki, there are a significant amount of parks and islands where you will be surrounded by trees and water. The best part is, these places are accessible for picnics and hiking, even for solo travelers. If you are staying in a larger city like Helsinki or Turku, make a list of the places you can head to for hiking or a short day trip before you arrive.
