Baby Travel Abroad: A First Time Mom’s Experience!

I became a mom seven years ago to beautiful baby girl. It was important for me to travel with her to Antigua for her to meet extended family. Being a first time mom, I was a little nervous, especially because I breast-fed and this was post 9/11 air travel. We all hear horror stories of parent’s who travel with their young children being treated unfairly by the T.S.A. I knew I needed to pack the most important essentials. Traveling alone without her father I knew I also had to pack light.

I have to say traveling with my daughter was a great experience overall. I learned some things along the way that I felt would be important to share with other first time parents. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t all roses and ice cream, but she had a blast which made my time with her even more satisfying. What I have realized in my travels with my daughter and now my son, is that it’s easier with one child than it is with two or more, even when the children are older. I encourage more first time parents to travel early on, especially if you only have one child. Keep in mind a “lap-child” is free until the age of 2. Take full advantage of low cost travel while you have the opportunity.

Keeping your baby hydrated and comfortable is a must on vacations where the climate is hot. We visited the beach daily, so sunscreen was a must. Making sure your baby has not only sunglasses but a beach hat will help to protect their skin at all times. With all my essentials I was able to pack for the both of us using a large carry-on bag with her basic necessities and a suitcase which was checked. (Side note) My suite case didn’t arrive until two days later upon our return to the U.S., hence the reason why I always travel light! But overall the experience of traveling with a baby has it’s overwhelming moments. I will admit I would do it again because of the amazing memories I was able to have with her, so early in her life.

The Real!!!!!!

Now I’m going to let you guys in on the “real”. I really didn’t appreciate the fact that I had to take her shoes off to go through T.S.A security, and I certainly made a little bit of a stink about it. But looking back now, I understand the importance of being cautious during travel. My advice, Don’t get too upset if they ask. If you truly feel like your’re being treated unfairly, or disrespected request another T.S.A agent or the supervisor be present. It has come to my attention that they may have changed their policy with this.

Also it’s important to know of any travel requirements or regulations that have changed since you traveled last. You should also know the airlines regulations relating to traveling with young children. Check out the link below for some of the T.S.A’s latest updates:
