Exploring Florence:

There’s something about the seafood in Florence that just takes you to another place. I’ve eaten a lot of delicious seafood in my travels, especially in Scandinavia. I don’t think I’ve had lobster anywhere more delicious than Florence, Italy. Florence holds a special place in my heart as it’s my mothers middle name. She’s not a fan of seafood, but I think this is the place she might actually change her mind. Here’s a sample of the some of the foods and places that made me remember how rare and amazing good food really is. Interested in learning how to make some of these meals? Check out Walkabout Florence and sign-up for the pizza and gelato making class that is available.

This was a great introduction to Italy as it was the first meal we had once we put our things in the room. Who would love a glass of wine and a plate of pasta. This restaurant was also where we had breakfast in the morning as they were associated with our Bed and Breakfast Le Casine.
Authentic Italian breakfast we got in the morning. Fresh fruits and delicious cakes and breads. Couldn’t ask for more.
Get gelato, pastries or espresso at Shake Cafe as you people-watch in the piazza located across from Firenze Santa Maria Novella.

This delicious pistachio croissant goes really well with a nice cup of cappuccino, no sugar needed.
Always best to eat in the local neighborhoods where you find modest prices for the most amazing things. Stop by Caffe degli Artigiani located in the Oltrarno neighborhood of Florence for some of both.
Want to experience the best seafood in Florence check out II Povero Pesce and be sure to order the Linguine All’astice also known as lobster linguine.
My very own pizza from my cooking class with Walkabout Florence.

Exploring Rome:

What can I say about Rome that has not already been said based on these magnificent photos. It’s definitely best to eat where the locals eat, which I learned quickly. I fell in love with the sweets in Rome as I fell in love with the seafood in Florence. Finding decent food on a budget in Rome is possible. There are some places that offer lunch specials where you get a salad, an appetizer, a pasta dish and a drink for a flat 10 Euro fee. The key is to enjoy your time here and experience as much of the food, the people and atmosphere as possible.

The best gelato you will have in Rome can be found at Quinto Gelateria. This was the passion fruit flavor. I tried several others but this was definitely my favorite.
Stop at Bibamus only if you’re willing to spend on a good meal. Not the place if you are on a budget. We stopped here on the last night of our trip. The steak was large and good enough for two. The lasagna was also very savory and delicious.
Said goodbye to Italy with my mouth, the same way I arrived. No trip to Italy would be complete without a nice croissant topped with apricot jam accompanied by a cup of cappuccino.

  1. Wow! Now I am really ready to visit Rome. I’m a foodie as well, but it is kinda tricky with kids. These dishes look super kid friendly (except maybe the lobster I would keep for myself)!

    1. For the restaurant with the lobster they ate fried prawns. Whenever we went out with the kids they shared a meal. The pizza is large enough for two and the pasta dishes can be split too. You would love the food in Italy for sure, but for me the best food was in Florence.
